Party building 101 for mobile RPGs

Party building 101 for mobile RPGs

August 15, 2026 · Lukas Brenner

Most people who bounce off mobile RPGs do it during the first real boss, and nearly always the problem is the party, not their reflexes. I hit this wall in Embercrown Saga and had to completely rethink how I built my team.

The core idea is balance. You want someone to absorb damage, someone to deal it, and at least one character who can heal or protect on demand. It sounds obvious, but early games hand you flashy attackers and it's tempting to stack four of them.

Positioning matters too, especially in tactical systems. Keeping your fragile damage dealers behind a tank changed almost every fight for me. Learn which enemies target the back row and adjust before the fight, not during it.

Finally, don't ignore cooldowns. A skill that's amazing every four turns is worse than a reliable one you can use constantly. Plan your rotation, and suddenly those wall-boss fights become manageable puzzles instead of dead ends.
